I just can't help myself

I don't think I exactly promised not to start anything new before the arrival of Rosy Fingered Dawn, did I? Well, I hope I didn't because I have. It's just a sock:

I'm not a great sock knitter. I like the idea, I just get bored with the incessant round and round and then, guess what?, you get to do it all over again for the other sock. However, I'm trying to like knitting socks. I went so far as to purchase Nancy Bush's "Folk Socks" and a fine book it is too. I like reading all that stuff about the history of socks and getting to grips with the different heel and toe shapings. I am not so keen on the actual knitting. I also bought Anna Zilboorg's "Simply Socks" and I like that a lot too. Strangely, I can't actually lay my hand on it at the moment, and can only assume it has gone down a knitterly black hole and will reappear in its own good time.

The very first sock I ever knitted was from this pattern and though it is quite old now it still works a treat. A sock is a sock is a sock. I am using the same pattern again and one big plus for Ms Kate, the "I-never-knit-a-swatch-unless-I-absolutely-have-to" knitter, is that you do not need to know your gauge before you start. You just start, Kate. It is destined for the foot of 'im indoors.

Not content with starting the one project I found myself irresistibly drawn to another. It seems to me that everywhere I turn I see this thing. It the "One Skein Wonder" from Glampyre Knits. I am not a great jumper on of bandwagons. (I have managed to resist the lure of Clapotis, thank you very much.) But I do like this little thing and because it is a little thing, it will quite easily be finished before the arrival of RFD. In fact, it is quite likely that it will be finished later on today.

This is the beginning of my One Skein Wonder. I'm using some Colinette Skye (one skein!) that is clouting round the house, size 4mm needles and I am winging it. I didn't bother with a swatch (!) but it seems to me that this is a generic pattern. You just continue in the same way until the number of stitches between the markers equals the width of your shoulders. So that's what I'm doing and I'm hoping that it will fit (if not me, then someone).
